Gino & Mae

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE

Santuario San Antonio and Manila Polo Club

Gino and Mae, both doctors, wanted at the outset a Beatles-inspired wedding theme. Yet, this decision came with a proviso: no yellow submarines, Granny Smith apples, and sunflowers. Mae couldn’t imagine how to inject The Beatles into a wedding without being tacky, but we embraced the challenge. They couple chose black with touches of gold to complete the theme they wanted: classic, understated elegance. That, and perhaps to symbolize the coming back from a dark time and spending what is now so precious of the circumstances that shaped it.

As the church doors opened to the song, “Here Comes the Sun,” Mae couldn’t hold back her tears. She remembered exactly that seven years ago, she and Gino decided to call off the wedding they initially planned. Achbishop Soc Villegas said it best in his homily: “Even before you were born, God knew you were going to get married to each other. Not years ago as you might have planned, not in the future as you might have feared, but today.”
Every piece of the wedding planning just fell into place. The female members of the entourage donned their printed black-and-gold gowns which they co-designed. Mae’s bouquet had peacock feathers, black calla lilies, black and gold berries, astilbe peach blossoms, and cameo jewelry reminiscent of the one from their civil wedding. Gino was never the person to wear his heart on his sleeve, and Mae was extremely enamored with his poignant speech which tackled the elephant in the room head-on by saying all the right things Mae waited to hear him say for so long. She was also smitten with his surprise guitar rendition of “All You Need is Love.” Mae didn’t think their wedding could have gotten any more real. Her next favorite part of the reception was her dancing with her dad and then with Gino to “Here, There, and Everywhere.”
Mae knew Gino worked hard to give her the dream wedding that she always wanted. But really, through their very high highs and very low lows, one thing was crystal clear: they didn’t need a grand wedding to be happy. They knew in their hearts since they fell in love that “All You Need is Love.”
